What matters is that the story is good, and worth telling. If there's a mystery, and people solve it, let them! Let them feel smart when it turns out they were right! It doesn't matter. The lesson don't crawl up your own butt trying to outsmart your audience or "subvert expectations." Just tell your story. People were losing their damn minds, not only because they got to be right, but because it pushed the show in an exciting new direction and they couldn't wait to see what came next. Did Alex Hirsch change anything? Did he get mad at the internet for spoiling the surprise? No! He delivered the answer he had always intended to the mystery he had written. A lot of people actually did just figure out where it was going. There were a lot of theories surrounding "the big twist." And rightfully so the show had many, many subtle hints along the way. Gravity Falls is not only an amazing show all around, but it's a perfect example of mystery writing, one that Hollywood in general and other shows in particular (Game of Thrones, Westworld) could stand to learn from.

The end of season 2 was rushed because it became the series finale instead of the lead-up to a third and final season, and I'd like to have seen what kind of direction the show would have gone. I respect that he was ready to move on and be done with it, but I still think that a huge opportunity for an animated movie, even a Disney Channel movie, was missed. Alex Hirsch felt that it was time for the show to end, he told Disney he was done, and Disney opted to let him end it his way.

Kim Possible comes to mind immediately, along with Phineas and Ferb, even the second season of Wander Over Yonder took on some of those qualities with the Lord Dominator subplot.įortunately, Gravity Falls was one of the few shows that ended on the creator's own terms instead of being handed over to a new production staff to milk a couple more underwhelming seasons out of it. Disney was actually really good at that in the mid-late '00s/early '10s. It's one of those kids shows that transcends age lines through creative plots and humor that appeal to all ages.

It still is one of the best shows ever, IMO. And if I'm a normal person in that audience, my first thought is going to be "who in the actual fuck just gave a 12 year old a double dose of PCP and set him loose?!?"Ĭompletely lost my shit, didn't find it for quite some time after. They're at a show and just watched two small children fall from the ceiling, struggle for a moment, and then the boy - wearing a torn up suit - leaps up with wide, wide eyes and throws his arms into the air, and victoriously screams "I AM A BEING OF PURE ENERGY WITH NO WEAKNESSES!" at the top of his lungs and then tackles the shit out of the other kid. and all I could think of at that moment was to consider it from the POV of the audience. It was my first time watching the series with friends, we got to the part where Bipper and Mable are fighting at Mable's puppet show, they fall from the rafters onto the stage. I think the hardest I've ever laughed at a television show was at that episode, though I was admittedly stoned.
